Un-decorating the tree

For future reference:

Never leave a Christmas tree loaded with lovely glass ornaments unattended when there are a curious 3 1/2-year-old and 1 1/2-year-old in the house.

(click to see the full effect of destruction)

On a positive note:

It didn't take long to get the remaining decorations off the tree and put away.

It won't take nearly as long to decorate the tree next year.

And last, but not least, no one was injured in the de-construction of this post.

Oh my!!!
At least no one got hurt! I love the way you've made the situation brighter ... "It won't take nearly as long to decorate the tree next year." Way to end the year! You are way ahead of us. We have some friends coming this week and we want to keep it up. Peaceful days for you!

Oh, that is NOT GOOD! Our dog did that when she was a puppy. She ate the glass ornaments and everything. This year, my mom got a twelve foot tree, which proceeded to fall over at one point, also breaking ornaments. At some point, will we laugh?

Oh no! I suppose it's very hard to have decorations with kids, puppies, and kittens! Last year my little niece went around and changed all the timers for the lights everywhere - to her they were just fun knobs to twist!

Yikes! and it looks like they did this after their gifts were received. I had a kitten take down a tree many years ago. It took me a while to view the damage (after making sure the kitty was okay, of course). Lost many beautiful Christopher Radko ornaments that year. We've since invested in a very sturdy tree stand.

I saw the title of this post and thought 'Already???? She's even earlier than I am!'

My reasons for undecorating so soon is less traumatic than yours though. I'm going back to France in two days and if I don't take down the tree, my boys will just ignore it and it'll still be standing when I next come back.

Best wishes for the New Year, Susan! Very glad I found you here.

This is when that formal front parlour would come in handy!

CG, if the grands hadn't "helped", the tree would probably still be there next week! Not that I wasn't sick of looking at it collecting dust.

Have fun with your guests and peace be with you as well, my friend.

Sandy, thank God the kids didn't eat any glass!! Next year I'm tying the tree to the window! LOL

Susan said...

Jill, I'll bet you had lights coming on and off at some interesting times! Kids!! :)

Susan said...

LOL, Cindy, yes the gifts had already been distributed, darn it! I went out today and bought a new Radko cardinal ornament which doesn't begin to replace all the ones I lost, but it's very pretty!

Deborah, yes much earlier than usual for me! I hope you have a safe trip back to France! Looks like security restrictions will be a little tighter. Be safe.

Happy New Year to you, too! And I'm very glad we found each other!

Sanna, yes! A formal parlor with locked doors! An excellent idea! :)

Oh, no!! But I have to chuckle. We had to leave the lower third of our tree bare when the CS was little; now we do the same thanks to the cats...Just glad no one was hurt...All of that aside, it is fun to have little ones about for the holidays (and you have them all the days)!
A very happy New Year to you and your family, Susan--with a big hug!

Oh my goodness...well than God no one was hurt! Too bad you couldn't find a way to make a piece of art or something out of the broken pieces so you can show them their "handiwork" when they are older! It would be a Christmas keepsake!

Oh no! Oh well, in a couple of years you can laugh about it.
We just did a table-top tree. It could be that I am just getting lazier.. :)

Oh no! Glad the little "darlings" didn't cut themselves!

Susan said...

ds, the little ones are what it's about around here! When the mommy and the daddy were completely dismayed over the tree falling, I told them it's just a thing, and things aren't important, children are.

Happy New Year and hugs to you, too!

Susan said...

Kathleen, what an excellent idea! I still have the pieces in a box, so maybe I can come up with some way to preserve them into something artistic. Which will be difficult as I haven't an artistic bone in my entire body! lol

Susan said...

Natashya, table-top trees are sounding better and better! I saw one on sale yesterday. Maybe I should go grab it!

Susan said...

Heather, the little "darlings" were fine, except for getting the scare of their little lives! It took quite a while to calm the littlest one.

LOL! Glad to hear there was no injury to the little ones :)

Yes, true, there's no life in it! But sad nonetheless. Your heart must have skipped a beat, and then you were relieved that no one was hurt.

I have to tell you though, the photo of the broken ornaments is beautiful. :| New camaera? ;-) It looks like some cork Christmas placemats we have of Radko ornaments. Except they aren't broken. Poor Susie!

Susan said...

Char, yes it hurt to have some of my collectible ornaments smashed to bits, but not as much as it would have if the kiddos had been injured.

Susan said...

Thank you, Cora, and yes, much worse, and it gives me an excuse to buy some new ones!

Susan said...

Kaye, I was sad for about two minutes, but then was over it. They're just things.

Susan said...

Dorothy, we certainly do a LOT of laughing when the grandkids around...sometimes the laughter has tears behind it, but you know how it is...you have them, too! :)

Susan said...

Stacy, not as thankful as we were! Things can be replaced, grandchildren can't! :)

Susan said...

Ruthie, heart skipping a beat..or two..and I wanted to scream, but Jaye and Kelly were so upset, so I tried to make the best of it so they wouldn't feel any worse...did a lot of hugging.

No, this is with my Nikon. Wonder if I could make a mosaic out of them...a tray or small table maybe? Or would the glass be too delicate?

VaNeSsA said...

Aww, bummer. Sorry. I didn't put any glass ornaments on our tree this year - just in case.

You could fill clear jars/vases with the bits. On a windowsill, that would be beautiful.

That's what my grandmother did with her broken jars after the 1994Bay Area earthquake. It was quite pretty.

Vanessa, that's a terrific idea! I'm so glad I fished them out of the trash bin! I knew there was a reason I like you, you're smart, talented and CRAFTY!!!
