The River and the Sea
"The river is within us, the sea is all about us . . ."
— T S Eliot (Four Quartets)
How does the river run within the sea?
Like the coyote, bounding deer-like
in the soy bean field last evening,
and behind him the honeyed sun
a young girl’s hair, cascading among
the trees. He distanced gradually
from the road we cycled, his body
now disappearing beneath
the shrubby, wavy green, now
reappearing in the bob and bounce
of a cork retreating from shore. Like
a dream. Like a secret stone that leaps
as the sun sets, an opal, a tiger’s eye,
to the horizon, until he and the sun are one.

Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed.
~President Dwight David Eisenhower

interesting! my choices would be:
Election
American President
Mr. Smith Goes to Washington
Frost/Nixon
Susan...you SAW "Soylent Green" ?? That was not the greatest thought...and back then we had never heard of "mad cow disease. :) I had forgotten all about that film.
Congrats on your gig! As soon as anyone says something is political, I get all irritated. Even though, just about any movie out there could probably qualify if you look hard enough. My first thought was Wag the Dog. It is the perfect representation of government, in my opinion. I thought it was very clever.
How about "Day of the Jackal" - I loved that. Going now to see your guest post. Yay!
Char, those are great choices, and I considered using the three of yours that weren't on my list. There were just so many!
Sandy, how can you live in America and not love politics! ;) I agree with your choice of 'Wag the Dog' and it was up there on my list, but I decided to go with another one.
WsperSweetly, so sorry I got you out of order! Yes, I've watched 'Soylent Green' with my oldest son a couple of times, mainly just so I can hear Charleton Heston scream those words, "It's people! Soylent green is PEOPLE!!!" Is it not the cheesiest movie? Actually Edward G. Robinson gave a very good performance and I think it was one of his last roles.
Thank you for visiting!
Ruthie, there were soooo many I could have listed, but I tried to keep it to four, which was very hard for me. It's been a long, long time since I saw 'Day of the Jackal'. Now that I've joined Netflix, I'll put it on my queue.
Napoleaon Dynamite is an interesting choice, Molly!
Vote for Pedro, Stacy, vote for Pedro ;0)
Thanks for hosting Susan - you made my Sunday a dream not having to come up with a topic for Monday!
No ifs, ands, or buts...THE CANDIDATE from 1972 starring Redford.
“Marvin ... What do we do now?”
Until I saw them on the same list, I didn't realize that Citzen Kane and All the President's Men are really two sides of the same coin, aren't they?
Yes, it was one of his last roles. I remember I had to laugh..my husband said "just think, that is what the world used to look like" when it came to a scene of horses in a meadow (I think.) I had to laugh..and I said.."Hon, it still looks like that. It's just a movie! :) I guess he sort of got lost in the moment!
Choice was ALL THE PRESIDENTS MEN. Did I tell you that.
Hugs,
Mona
p.s. I LOVE Netflex! LOVE IT!
Stacy, that's one I haven't seen yet.
Tattered, Hi there! Yes, 'The Candidate' was high on my list, too. I also considered 'Bulworth', but I was trying to keep it to one page! haha
The Gal, that's one I'll have to think about and perhaps rewatch both to see. It's been a while.
Mona, Wow! Your husband really did get caught up, eh? I loved 'All the President's Men' too, but figured it would be on most everyone's list.
I just joined Netflix a couple of weeks ago and I love it, too! I'm not sure why I held out so long. Stubborn, I suppose!
I haven't seen Soylent Green in ages. I made my son watch that with me when he was a teenager. He still makes references to it.
I enjoyed The Contender (2000) with Jeff Bridges and Joan Allen.
I've never seen Napoleaon Dynamite. Thanks for the tip.
Bella
Susan,
I'm not so into movies, or more accurately, I have trouble remembering what I've seen (!) so I'll give this one a pass.
You were the perfect choice for this assignment!!!!!!
All the President's Men! Forgot about that one! How great was that?
Soylent Green! now that is a blast from the past.
My problem with movie lists is that altho I watch and enjoy many movies I can never think of them if trying to form a list...unless I see the title and then I say Oh yes!...I loved (or hated) that one!...I should write all the movies I see down so I remember them all...As far as adding to your list the first one off the top of my head before I read other comments was Wag the Dog...loved it
loved Napoleon Dynamite and Election too...I guess I like my politics lighthearted which is why I like the Daily Show too:)
I loved Syriana too...
xo
Bella, I had forgotten about 'The Contender'! That was a very good movie! I love Joan Allen and Jeff Bridges. Ohhh, Netflix!
Deborah, that's okay, m'dear! You don't have to comment on each and every one! I'll still love ya!
CG, Ha! You would say that! I can see that I should have had ATPM on my list!
Sunmallia, I'll say! Not too many people I know have ever seen that classic!
Oliag, I've got two words for you....imdb.com!!! You just type in political movies (or whatever kind you're looking for) and it's the best memory-jogger ever invented. You surely didn't think I remembered all those on my own, didja? I'm not THAT good.
'Wag the Dog' was great. I knew I should have used that one!
OK, I don't read all of the other comments, so if someone said it already, I apologize, but ELECTION with Reese Witherspoon and Matthew Broderick is hilarious!
