The River and the Sea
"The river is within us, the sea is all about us . . ."
— T S Eliot (Four Quartets)
How does the river run within the sea?
Like the coyote, bounding deer-like
in the soy bean field last evening,
and behind him the honeyed sun
a young girl’s hair, cascading among
the trees. He distanced gradually
from the road we cycled, his body
now disappearing beneath
the shrubby, wavy green, now
reappearing in the bob and bounce
of a cork retreating from shore. Like
a dream. Like a secret stone that leaps
as the sun sets, an opal, a tiger’s eye,
to the horizon, until he and the sun are one.

Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed.
~President Dwight David Eisenhower

Beautiful song. I've never heard it before, but I like it.
You know I ENJOYED this!
Boy, YouTube continues to amaze me... so much out there to watch, who needs Cable TV!
Well, I listened--and I learned. Beautiful song. Such a sad, sad story for its singer. Thank you.
I know no comment necessary, but I still like to say hi. Hi Susan! :o)
she was very talented
So loving your photographs, stunning. Enjoyed sitting here and listening to Nicolette.
Stevie, I was going through my old albums a few days ago and ran across Nicolette's. This was one of my favorite songs on it.
No kidding, Judy! I was amazed that this song was out there...it's pretty obscure. Obviously another Nicolette fan. I played this album until it was nearly worn out.
ds, it's a shame that she had such limited commercial success and that her life ended at such a young age. It was lovely that Emmylou, Linda Ronstadt and Neil Young took her under their wings. I suppose that's more than most talented artists can hope for in such a crowded arena.
Hi there, Elle! I'm always happy to see your smiling face!
Char, I really liked the sweetness of her voice, but with that little bit of a rough edge.
Thank you very much, Maggie!
I know you're taking a blogging break but I just want to say thanks for introducing me to Nicolette Larson...love this song:)
Will see you at the other end of your break:) Have Fun!
xo
Enjoy your bloggie vacation.
