I am not a small woman
feeling at times Amazon-ish
among other women.
My two sons made me feel,
when beside them,
petite and somehow more feminine.
The older one intelligent
The older one intelligent
and burning with the thirst for knowledge,
sensitive and quiet,
giving warm, enveloping embraces.
The younger one burning,
just burning,
feeling too deeply,
in your face making you be honest with yourself.
Nothing too scary, too fast
or too insurmountable,
except for life.
The older one's shadow
still giant-like
beside my lesser one.
The younger one's shadow
is a ghost
I chase in my dreams.

Such heart-felt poetry. I'm thinking of you, Susan.
Thank you, Deb. Feeling melancholy today.
I see your school photo in the "you might also like" thumbnails, smiling there with your dimple. A lot of sunsets since that picture was snapped by some professional photographer - "next!"
The cycles we go through as humans can be inconceivably painful. How we keep managing to survive day after day, month after month, year after year, decade after decade, is what makes this trip worthwhile. You are one very, very strong lady. It's ok if you feel melancholy some days. You have a right.
Do take care.
You wrote this? Girl, you should publish. I'm sorry you are feeling melancholy, but it seems to be working for you in the poetry arena. Also, it seems that perhaps I have missed some of your posts (how did that happen???). Please accept my humble apologies. I'm off to check them out!
beautiful write - i love the feelings it invokes.
hope you feel cheerier soon - sometimes it helps to have the blues a bit though. i'm always available to talk/e-mail if you need an ear to bend.
One never really knows what shadows another has following them.
My wish is that this shadow never becomes too heavy as to weigh you down forever and not too light as to not be seen.
Beautiful poem my friend! I wish I could give you a big hug.
This is absolutely beautiful.
Beautiful poetry...thanks for sharing it with us.
Ruthie, you know the old saying....what doesn't kill you makes you stronger...I guess it's true. Sometimes there are moments like today.
Sandy, I actually wrote it a couple of months ago and put it away. I just happened to find it this weekend and it fit my mood.
Thank you for your nice words.
Char, you're always thinking of others...so very sweet of you to offer your shoulder...someday I may take you up on it. :)
Sanna dear, you made a lovely wish for me and that's exactly the way I want it to be. Sometimes I just have to acknowledge that it's there.
Dear Cindy, I feel the warmth of your hug from across the country. Thank you for caring.
Stacy, thank you very much. You're very sweet.
Kathleen, thank you so much for your kind words.
Very cool - the imagery with the shadows in particular.
Sons always stay close to a mom's heart don't they?
Very beautiful ... both the sons and the thoughts
Susan, a beautiful poem, lovely boys, both so different. I'm a little teary here as I went through a lot of angst with my son a couple of decades back. Sorry to hear you so down right now. xa
Oh, Susan. You wrote this beautifully, brave woman. As Ruth said, you have a right to your melancholy.
A bloggy hug to you.
Thank you, Molly.
Yes they do, steviewren, even when they're gone forever.
Thank you, Susan and thank you for visiting my blog. I popped over to take a look at yours and it is quite lovely. I'll be back later.
Dear Alaine, thank you for your kind words. Sometimes being a mother can be the most difficult job in the world. It's the remembering.
I'm feeling better now.
Sweet words of comfort, ds, as only a mother knows how to say them. Sometimes I just have to acknowledge him, y'know?
