The days go by...

13,870 of them, to be exact, not taking into account Leap Year days. Thirty-eight years since we said "I will", not "I do". Most of the days were happy ones, or just ho-hum. Some of them were heartbreaking and sad beyond belief. It's easy to get through the happy and ho-hum ones. The real test is getting through the not-so-happy ones. We've passed the test and the glue we've spun is holding fast.

Happy Anniversary to my love

Congratulations! Sometimes "Ho Hum" is difficult too - marriage sure isn't easy, but it's sure wonderful.

Happy anniversary! What a cute couple ... then and now. Much water goes under that bridge, doesn't it? Both murky and clear. It takes lots of love and a bit of luck to make it so long. Congratulations and enjoy the day!

(We too will be married 38 years in September!)

Congratulations, and Happy Anniversary to you and David! What a lovely wedding portrait. Your dress is similar to mine. And may I ask please, what color was David's tuxedo jacket? Is the blue trim a hint? :)

It's true isn't it, that the hardest times bring out the character of the people, and the relationship. Once you've gone through so much together, the bond is deep and wide, and the mystery changes, but it's still there.

Happy Anniversary and I adore the photo since I too lived through the days of men wearing tux'es like that. I think my first husband actually wore a plaid suit jacket when we were married in 1973.

Wishing you MANY more happy ho hum years together.

Congratulations! What a sweet couple! We don't see much of your sweet hubby on your blog...

Wishing you both many more happy, ho-hum years together! Cheers! Are you doing something special to mark the occasion?

Congratulations on your anniversary. That's a lot of years and a big accomplishment!

Thank you, Jackee. Nothing worthwhile is ever easy...it takes hard work. I think it makes one appreciate it more.

Ruthie, I knew someone would ask that question! Why do you think I changed it to B&W? LOL The jacket was actually more of a baby blue in which I had absolutely no say. He waited until the very last minute to reserve the tuxedoes and had to take the leftovers. Not only were they BLUE, they were also an awful brocade kind of fabric. ((shudder)). I was ready to divorce him before we ever took our vows. And the worst part of all, my attendants' dresses were lavender. Oh, lordy!

My dress was bargain basement...I bought it off the clearance rack for $80. The whole wedding only cost us $600 which we paid for ourselves because neither of our parents could afford to help out. There was no reception dinner. You got peanuts, mints, cake and punch. That's it..thanks folks, for the gifts...sorry we couldn't afford to feed ya!

I'm pretty sure the only mystery left in our marriage is whether I'll kill him when he retires! ;)

Sorry, Debbie! I got you out of order! Thank you for the good wishes!

There's definitely been a lot of different water gone under our bridge, just like most people who stick it out. To steal from Carole King, "my life has been a tapestry of rich and royal hue...an everlasting vision of an everchanging view".

Susan said...

Thank you, Di! Yes, some of those tuxedoes were pretty hideous...and it was blue brocade. I do believe I would prefer that over plaid, although I hated it at the time. In the end, it didn't matter...we were just as married and just as happy.

Sandy, sweet girl, thank you! You'll get there someday...right now you would have had to get married when you were five to have been married as long as I have! LOL

Susan said...

Sweet Char, thank you, darlin'.

Susan said...

Cindy, thank you, dear friend. If David had his way, you would never see him here! BTW, I don't recall seeing any pics of your hubby on your blog, or anywhere else (cough-FB-cough) either. Have I just not been looking in the right places?

He's in Little Rock tonight, so I guess not. We're not too big on making a fuss. I did have an ice cream cone to celebrate while I was in town today. Woo-hoo!

Susan said...

Kathleen, thank you! We'll talk accomplishment when we're celebrating 50 or 60!

Happy Anniversary Susie Girl! You've been married longer than me but not by much. You both look so young and unprepared. Hahahahaha! Weren't we all?

Congratulations. This is an accomplishment.

LOL!! Boy, did you ever hit the nail on the head, Debbie Girl!! I was 19 and the biggest baby (coughspoiledbratcough) that you would ever want to see. I'm not sure why he put up with me all the years it took me to grow up, but he did, and here we are...still cookin'.

Thank you.

Hope your anniversary was as good as your marriage has been, Susan. Hard to think of you as a spoiled brat! :) I was just under 19 when I got married in 1963.

Happy Anniversary Susan! What an adorable couple you are there:) A long lasting marrige is a rare thing these days...and I for one know it does take work and compromise...Glad you made it through the bad times and I hope for many more happy and ho hum times:)

xo

If I recall correctly I think I paid $25 for my wedding dress off the rack in Jordan Marsh...polyester!

Happy Anniversary to a wonderful Sister and brother-in-law, Retirement will be a breeze, wait and see...where is David taking you out to this weekend? ...lol

Congratulations. If you keep travelling, then maybe you'll both live to a ripe old, fussy, age together!

Well, let's chalk up two more Susie-Ruthie connections in the history books. Don waited until the last minute to order his tuxes, and they were gross, but at least they were black. :) Ruffled shirts though, ewwww.

And I bought my wedding dress off the bargain rack when my parents were shopping for a dress for Mom at Knapp's. I was still in high school, no boyfriend. I paid I think $120 for the dress and $40 for the head piece. I asked Dad, is this silly? I don't even have a boyfriend? I think all he saw was how little $$ they cost. Gladly, I still liked the dress when I got married, about five years later.

(NON sister) Judy.... ohhhhhh thanks for sharing that picture, it made me smile :) Hope you make it to #50!

Deborah said...

Congratulations, Susie! Gee, you have lasted twice as long as I did...

I enjoyed the comments a lot - especially between you and Ruth. I made my wedding dress (just the other week my daughter was rolling her eyes at the wedding pictures. How COULD you have worn THAT, Mom???) and we paid for a dinner for 25 people. The whole deal cost $825! I am firmly opposed to over-the-top weddings and secretly hope my children elope.

Susan said...

Thank you, Wanda! I knew you were a pretty young bride like me. And I've been trying to suppress my brattiness...sometimes I succeed, sometimes I don't. ;)

Susan said...

Oliag, I'll bet you looked beautiful in your polyester JM dress. It's not what's on the outside that makes a marriage anyway. It's damned hard work.

Thank you.

Susan said...

Hi, sister Judy, and thank you, sweetie. He's not taking me anywhere. He's babysitting and I'm taking myself somewhere! How's that for a celebration!

Susan said...

Thank you, Sanna. I'm thinking too much togetherness might work the opposite way. I'm not opposed to taking separate vacations once in a while. ;)

Susan said...

Wow, Ruthie, that's what I call looking to the future! I don't think I would have been that daring...not to mention the fact that I might have changed sizes 3 or 4 times in that length of time. I guess it would help you stay on a diet.

Susan said...

Hi, non-sis Judy! Thank you! We looked young didn't we? Not so much these days, but that's life. I hope we all make it to #50!

Susan said...

Well, Deb, I think it's very commendable that you made your own dress and I bet it was lovely, regardless of what your modern daughter thinks. I might have made mine, but I just happened to find that one, I liked it and it fit, except for being a tad bit too short (the story of my life in those days, everything was too short for someone 5'9"). I did make my attendants' dresses...all two of them.

Happy Anniversary and many more (with only good times & adventures to share)!!! Such a lovely couple you were and are. Congratulations!

Such babies you were! I love looking back at wedding photos. I think they should inact a rule that men need to wear tuxes on a regular basis - they always look so handsome in them ;0)
