Saturday Serenade
Margaret Whiting died on January 10 at the age of 86. Her rendition of 'Moonlight in Vermont' is one of my favorite songs of all time. Probably because I fell in love with Vermont the first time I visited that beautiful state.
Fresh Air's Terry Gross interviewed Ms. Whiting in 1988. You can read the interview in it's entirety here. Or you can listen to the podcast in which she sings a few of her famous songs.

I remember her singing with Rosemary Clooney and Rose Marie. Margaret had a very interesting and unusual marriage also!
It's beautiful and nostalgic, Susie. And the photos in the video are gorgeous.
Beautiful. I close my eyes, and I am back in Vermont where we spent a week in summer when the CS was little, at her grandfather's house. Cousins aplenty to play and explore with--and at night all the adults and every child gazed up at the clear night, guessing constellations, counting falling stars, gazing with awe at the moon, which seemed so much larger there.
Thank you.
Always wanted to go there, starting when I saw 'White Christmas'. (But was it really filmed in Vermont?)
One day maybe I'll stop off there on the way (!!) to and fro.
beautiful song. i never have hear her before. thank you for sharing that
Ahhhhhhhhh ... now that's what I'm talking about!
I feel as if I just went on a very restful mini vacation ... sigh ...
I did hear the story on NPR that day and will admit that I knew nothing of the singer...it was a facinating story...loved the part of her being married to a famous porn star! Thanks for this link to her music...I enjoyed it tremendously!
Wanda, I'll have to see if there are any videos of her and Rosie. That would be awesome.
Yes, her marriage was verrrry interesting! LOL. But apparently the love of her life.
Ruthie, my kind of music, my kind of scenery. :)
ds, David and I spent a week in New England for our 20th anniversary and Vermont was my favorite inland NE state. We also took my MIL there five years ago. I would go every year if I could.
Deb, you would love it, but I imagine 'White Christmas' was most likely filmed on the back lot of whichever studio produced it. It looked a little fakey at times.
Char, it was my pleasure.
CG, that's what I call smooooooth. Her voice was gorgeous.
Oliag, I didn't get to hear all of it that day in the car, so I listened to it all on NPR.org. I love their website. I thought it was very interesting the way Terry Gross ever so delicately introduced the subject of her marriage. :)
I'm only familiar with Ella Fitzgeralds' version of "Moonlight in Vermont". This must be the original version.
I've never been to Vermont, but my son may be looking into a college there.
Dutchbaby, I believe it is the original. Her dad was good friends with Johnny Mercer. To me, it's the definitive rendition.
Which school? We've seen Bennington College and University of Vermont and both are beautiful schools in gorgeous settings. I'm trying to win the HGTV dream house that was built in Stowe. If we would be so fortunate to win, we wouldn't be able to keep it and would have to take the money prize just so we could pay the income taxes on the winnings. It would be wonderful to go there to see it, though. I've never been to Stowe.
