Fresh veggies at the White House!
For those of us who signed the petition to take back the White House lawn,
there's good news. It seems it has been decided that the First Family will have a vegetable garden at the White House! What great news and a wonderful example to set for the American people. I can't wait to see what is planted. I hope Sasha and Malia will get involved. I've heard they aren't very fond of certain vegetables. Maybe if they have a hand in growing them, it will make the girls feel differently about them.
Yay! Someone was listening!

Char, I hope they follow through with this. It would be really awesome, indeed.
It sounds just the way we hoped, symbolic and educational. When I saw Alice Waters on '60 Minutes' last Sunday I was thinking how cool it would be if she got involved and brought even more attention to it (though I didn't know Sunday that they'd decided to do it). Her edible schoolyard project in CA, and being the first famous chef to promote locally grown produce in her restaurant Chez Panisse (she invented 'California Cuisine') would help her lend an even stronger focus on growing your own.
I like your idea of Malia and Sasha growing veggies they don't care for, and learning to love them! In fact on the '60 Minutes' show, they had a garden/cooking class in a local high school where she visited, and these boys grew, cooked and ATE things they would have thought were disgusting before. How cool is that!?

We were outside last evening with Aimee & family and Gaige, Nathan and Kaitlyn were digging in the garden and planting peas. I didn't have the heart to tell them that Poppy would be disturbing their seeds this weekend when he builds the raised beds. Hopefully they will think their peas magically appeared in an orderly fashion in their own bed!
Good news! I think more people than ever before will be planting gardens this year!

I have been thinking about taking the plunge and doing some veggies in the front garden. What use is a lawn, anyway?
Tipper, there's been a big increase in seed and garden materials sales this year. I saw last evening that Michelle Obama will be breaking ground today for the new veggie garden! This is just wonderful!
Natashya, I think that's a fabulous idea! You could do a couple of raised beds and be amazed at the amount of food you can grow in a small space.
Hope they accept whatever you tell them. :)

My picky daughter will actually eat peas freshly picked, but won't dream of touching them otherwise.

I caught the end of an NPR Report today talking about "pitchforks in the White House lawn" and they went on to explain an area of the lawn is being dug for a garden. I wasn't clear on the significance. Now I am.

I think I signed that petition right after the election, or maybe before. I can't remember. Laurie at Life Force Vibrations did a post on it.
There's nothing like fresh peas straight from the garden. They're so fun for kids to shell. I even like doing it! I hope you're planting some, too.
CG, too bad I missed the NPR piece. Funny, but I've yet to see anything about it directly. All I've managed to see are the clips from network sites or blog pieces.
I love the idea that many Americans will be trying their hand at gardening this year. Maybe we will start up a new generation who will love the food produced at home. Toss in some hens and you have a complete diet!!
Hey, Don! Wow, since I posted this I've heard about it everywhere! We were at the hardware store this morning and I was talking to the guy in the gardening section and he said that their garden sales were up by 300% this year! Isn't that amazing? I'm really excited about gardening this year, too!
