The River and the Sea
"The river is within us, the sea is all about us . . ."
— T S Eliot (Four Quartets)
How does the river run within the sea?
Like the coyote, bounding deer-like
in the soy bean field last evening,
and behind him the honeyed sun
a young girl’s hair, cascading among
the trees. He distanced gradually
from the road we cycled, his body
now disappearing beneath
the shrubby, wavy green, now
reappearing in the bob and bounce
of a cork retreating from shore. Like
a dream. Like a secret stone that leaps
as the sun sets, an opal, a tiger’s eye,
to the horizon, until he and the sun are one.

Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed.

What a BEAUTIFUL sight to behold! Gosh you're so lucky to have that scene in your back yard!!! People drive for miles to see colors like those. And your chooks look so happy poking around in the grass. LOVELY!!!
Thank you, Amy! We do enjoy our "little house in the big woods". You're pretty lucky with all the nice views that you have, too. Maybe we should do one of those vacation swaps sometime. One thing for sure--we wouldn't have to worry whether our chooks were being cared for properly! They're staying on our only patch of green grass. David hasn't had to mow in weeks. We're supposed to get rain tonight, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
As much as I dislike autumn as a harbinger to winter, it is a VERY pretty season. Lovely pictures.
Thank you, Fannie! The only thing I like about winter is sitting in front of a roaring fire and sipping a cup of tea while I read a good book. Oh, and wearing sweaters!
